Canada is a safe and welcoming place for people of the 2SLGBTQI+ community. This community includes lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, Two Spirit, intersex community members and others. The Region of Durham proudly embraces the diversity and contributions of the 2SLGBTQI+ community and its allies.

Laws in Canada and Ontario

Same-sex marriage is legal in all of Canada.

It is illegal in Canada to deny service to someone based on their sexual orientation.

Laws continue to be passed outlawing discrimination against transgender individuals. There is a particular focus on gender-specific and any-gender bathrooms and change rooms in Ontario public spaces and schools.

PFLAG Canada

PFLAG Canada helps with issues of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. It is an organization that provides support, education and access to resources.

PFLAG Durham Region's LGBTA Youth Leadership Camp is an adult-facilitated and peer-mentored overnight summer leadership camp for youth ages 14 to 17. LGBTQ+ and allied youth come together each summer for four days of learning, fun and making new friends. LGBTA Youth Leadership Camp focuses on building skills, nurturing leadership potential, and strengthening personal spirit and resiliency.

Durham Pride Prom

Durham Pride Prom is an all-inclusive event for Durham's 2SLGBTQI+ youth, friends and allies ages 16 to 21. The event is organized so that students have the ability to attend a prom where everyone is welcome and accepted. There are several scholarships available for attendees. Gay Straight Alliance (GSA)

A Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) is a high school student-led club that provides a safe and supportive environment to LGBTQ+ students and their straight allies. Both the public and Catholic school boards support GSAs in Durham high schools.  

LGBTQ helpline

The LGBTQ Prideline is a helpline for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and questioning community. It's open for calls every day from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at 1-855-877-7433.

LGBT Youth Line

The LGBT Youth Line is a toll-free service provided by youth, for youth. It also provides peer-support through an online forum and email response. The Youth Line is open Sunday to Friday, 4:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Call 1-800-268-9688 or visit the LGBT Youth Line website for help and information.
