Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS)
The SWIS program is an initiative funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada that places settlement works in elementary and secondary schools in Durham Region to connect newcomer families with services and resources within the school and greater community in order to promote more successful settlement and foster student achievement.
Some of the services that SWIS workers provide are group information sessions (usually in partnership with school staff) and orientation to school staff to increase awareness of settlement needs and orientation to newcomer students when they first arrive in Canada.
For newcomer high school students SWIS offers a Newcomer Orientation Week (NOW) that provides orientation for students into their new school.
The Welcome and Information for Newcomers (WIN) program is a one day program for newcomer teens between grades 6 -8. It provides students with a basic introduction for future positive interaction between students, parents, the school and settlement workers.
