Avtar Singh

Avtar SinghAfter immigrating to Canada from India with a mere 10 dollars, Avtar began working by trade in the tool and die business. When Avtar was laid off from his job he knew he had to get creative and find a new way of supporting his family. Avtar decided to move from the Scarborough area to the City of Pickering because of the desired waterfront lifestyle.

After losing his job, Avtar would keep busy by walking daily to and from the Coffee Time near his home. Each day he would pass the same piece of baron land situated near the water by Liverpool Road. Something told him that this empty, over-grown area would be the opportunity he needed to start his new career. He could see what others could not, the potential for an Indian cuisine restaurant.

With no experience in the restaurant industry and no money, it was understandable that his wife was initially not impressed with her husband’s idea. However, Avtar refused to let his dream go and was persistent with his plans. One day his good friend, Dr. Baldev called and offered to be his financial partner in the business, just the break Avtar needed. Today, “Zeera by the Bay Fine Indian Cuisine” is rated the number one Indian restaurant, 2009 Diamond winner by the News Adviser Reader’s Choice Award.

“Canada is a dream country to live in,” says Avtar. “People with vision and determination will be successful. I faced troubles like many others, but I knew that with the will and hard work anything was possible.”

Avtar also owns a Reader’s Choice Award winning ice cream shop in Pickering’s picturesque Nautical Village. With a newly installed line controller, the success of the shop is obvious.

Avtar’s accomplishments certainly make him a role model in the Durham business community. Eagerly wanting to pass on his words of advice to other new comers Avtar shares, “There is hope. There is always light at the end of the tunnel, never give up!”
